Velitelství pluku vzniklo 1. listopadu 1954 přejmenováním z velitelství 26. pěšího pluku [1951-1954]. Nacházelo se ve Vimperku a podléhalo velitelství 2. střelecké divise [1954-1955]. Od svého vzniku užíval pluk krycího označení VÚ 9376 a nesl čestný název "Juraje Jánošíka".
