Vznikl z 5th Antitank Battalion (Provisional) 5th Infantry Division dne 16.12.1941 ve Fort Custeru v Michiganu. Do skotskeho pristavu Clyde dorazil 16.12.1944, a ve francouzskem Le Havru se vylodil 26.1.1945. V teto dobe byla jednotka vybavena tazenymi protitankovymi dely.
