The 629th Tank Destroyer Battalion is formed on 15 December 1941 at Fotr Meade, Maryland.In January 1944 it arrives in Dorset, England and is armed with M 10 tank fighters.It lands on Omaha Beach on 2 July 1944.It performs the role of artillery support in the vicinity of Caumont.It is assigned to the 30th Infantry Division and with it takes part in the fighting in the Mortain area. In early August, he participates in the formation of the Falaise Pocket.As part of V Corps, he advances through Paris towards Luxembourg.He takes part in the fighting in the Hürtegen Forest and on the Siegfried Line.24 December 1944, he is deployed to the Battle of the Ardennes, where he fights until January 1945.He participates in the renewed attack against the Siegfried Line in February 1945.He crosses the Rhine River on 11 March 1945 at Remagen.In the same month he is re-equipped with M36 tank fighters.He leads operations against the Ruhr Pocket. After that he heads south to Bavaria.He reaches the Isar River where he also ends offensive operations.
