The DM2A3 torpedo was developed as part of a joint AEG and Elsag program to modernize the DM1 and DM2A1 torpedoes.The first step in the development of the DM2A3 torpedoes was the modernization of the guidance system. The sight on the torpedo has increased detection capability and range, increased angle of view, increased jamming resistance, and target recognition capability. A fibre optic cable is used to transmit data and control commands. At the same time, the upgrade has taken into account the planned use of torpedoes in shallow waters with an excess of false sonar reflections from the bottom or caused by layers of water of different temperature and salinity (Baltic Sea profile).
