Brief History
The German concern Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (IABG) stated that the GSD LuWa project (Luftbeweglichen Waffenträger) was launched in April 2020 at the initiative of the Bundes-Ministerium für Verteidigung (BMVg) and the Federal Office for Armaments (Ausstrnik Use of the Bundeswehr, BAAINBw). The LuWa vehicle is to replace Wiesel transporters for airborne and mountain units. After fourteen months of development, representatives of BMVg, BAAINBw and Colonel Jani Topolovec, Slovenian Attaché, were briefed on the results of the development. The static demonstration took place on June 22, 2021 on the premises of the ACS company in Derching near Augsburg.
Three German companies participated in the development of the GSD LuWa demonstrator: ACS, FFG, IABG and one Slovenian: Valhalla Turrets. The vehicle was designed to be able to transport helicopters CH-47 and CH-53. The design of the split crawler chassis is to ensure a kind of momentum of the vehicle damaged by the explosion of the anti-tank mine. Each running system of this chassis is driven by its own electric motor built into the drive wheel, which is powered by a generator located in the vehicle. The front belt system consists of a front drive wheel, three travel wheels and one support pulley, which is also tensioning. The rear belt system consists of a rear drive wheel, three travel wheels, a support pulley and a tension wheel. The LuWa chassis uses rubber belts, which are fitted/removed as one piece and allow the two-member crew to replace the defective piece on their own. The split crawler is expected to improve vehicle throughput and stability.
The LuWa transporter is equipped with a tower from the Slovenian company Valhalla with a 27mm Mauser cannon.
The crew of the vehicle consists of two people. The driver sits in front, the commander-shooter in the back.
14.10.2021 started driving and shooting tests on the polygons of the Bundeswehr.
