Mine, Antipersonnel, Nonmetallic, M14

This is a triple-burst antipersonnel mine with a plastic body. It is cylindrical in shape with six vertical ribs in the lower half of the mine body. The mine is very small with a height of approximately 4 cm and a body diameter of approximately 5.1 cm. The foot section has a yellow arrow on the upper surface, which points to either the letter S (Safed) or the letter A (Armed), which are located on the mine body. The mine is initiated by a pressure of approximately 9-16 kg (20-30 lbs) and for safe handling a U-shaped metal cotter pin is used to secure the mine to prevent accidental engagement. When the mine is activated (position A), the cotter pin is pulled out and the detonator (rises on the mine) moves downwards to initiate the M46 detonator (which is integrated inside the mine body). This causes the main charge (about 28 grams of Tetryl) to explode.

It was used by the US armed forces between 1955 and 1974. It was a small and very inexpensive weapon, and was widely deployed, e.g. in Vietnam. The plastic body and the absence of any metal, except for the firing pin, spring and presumably the detonator body, caused considerable difficulty in locating mines. This mine was not intended to kill the enemy, but only to wound (disable) him. The wounded soldier (as opposed to the dead one) then further tied up considerable human and material resources.

The mines were stored or distributed in a wooden box (with a cardboard box inside) in 90 pieces.
The mine was and still is used by many countries around the world.
