During the Second World War, in addition to the Elefant, another development program was underway in Germany to acquire a heavy tank fighter. Its origins can be traced back to 1942, when Adolf Hitler pushed for the accelerated completion of the development of a 12.8 cm calibre towed anti-tank gun. In early 1943, a proposal was made to mount this massive weapon on a tank chassis. According to a proposal dated 21.03.1943, it initially spoke of a heavy Sturmgeschütz that would be capable of destroying enemy armoured targets at more than 3000 m.
