June 17, 1953 - Uprising in Berlin
Four years after the founding of the GDR, its regime shook. Paradoxically, it was the heroic builders and workers of the "Stalinanlee" - Stalin's Alley in Berlin - who protested against the state-imposed wage cuts on June 16, 1953, and marched on the seat of government. The next morning, the lone demonstration became a nationwide uprising for better living conditions, for freedom and for the unification of Germany. But the moment the first Soviet tanks roll over Potsdamer Platz, it is clear that the SED dictatorship will cement the division of Germany for decades to come.
