Colonel Spiridon Matveyevich Fochkin





Spiridon Matveyevich Fochkin was born on 25 December 1902 in Mariupol.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, S. M. Fochkin volunteered for the Red Army on May 12, 1918, and was enlisted as a soldier in the 6th Mtsensk Volunteer Regiment of the 1st Inza Division. He took part in the fighting with the Czechoslovak Legionnaires in the Central Volga and Volga regions, in the districts of Akchurinsk, Syzran, Samara, Buguruslan. In November he was transferred with his division to the Southern Front and fought with the troops of General A. I. Denikin near the villages of Vesenskaya, Nikolayevskaya, Lugansk, Debaltsevo and Radokovo stations. In April 1919, near Lugansk, he was wounded by shrapnel in the arm and leg. In May, near Radokovo station, he was captured by Denikin's White Guards and was placed in a prisoner-of-war camp in Kamensk. He worked in the camp bakery for a few days, then fell ill with typhus and was placed in an infirmary, from where he managed to escape in June. On arrival in Ostrogozhsk, he checked in with the military commander of the town and was evacuated to a hospital in the town of Grjazi in the Tambov province. In July he left the hospital for his hometown, where, due to severe complications from his illness, he remained until May 1920. After recovering in June 1920, he resumed service and was assigned as a Red Army rifleman to a separate machine-gun battalion of the South-Western Front. From August 1920 to January 1921 he trained in front-line machine-gun courses, and on his return to the battalion he was appointed platoon commander. From May to October 1921 he was a political officer in the 1st section of the Home Guard of the Tambov Political Secretariat. He took part in the suppression of the uprising of A. S. Antonov in the Tambov gubernia. From October 1921 he served in the 134th Rifle Regiment of the 45th Rifle Division as a company politruk and platoon commander. In August 1922 he was sent to study at the 15th Infantry Course in Kiev, renamed the 5th Kiev Infantry School in December. After graduating in September 1925, he was appointed platoon commander of the 251st Rifle Regiment of the 84th Rifle Division. From August 1927 to August 1928 he was at the Moscow Military-Political Courses of V. I. Lenin, then he was appointed as a polytrooper of the 16th Rifle Regiment of the 6th Rifle Division in the city of Oriol. In October 1931, he was transferred to the 146th Rifle Regiment of the 49th Rifle Division in Kineshma, where he served as a political officer, then as chief of the regimental school, and commander of the rifle battalion. In August 1939, he took command of the 245th Rifle Regiment of the 123rd Rifle Division.

During the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940, the 245th Rifle Regiment participated in the breaking of the "Mannerheim Line", the fighting on the Vyborg Line. During the offensive the M-1 car on which Fochkin was riding hit a mine, as a result of the explosion he was severely wounded. Until April 1940 he was treated in the Leningrad Military Hospital and later in the "Gniloye" sanatorium Pskov Oblast, then he was appointed deputy commander of the 272nd Rifle Regiment of the 123rd Rifle Division. On 3 December of the same year, he assumed command of this regiment and was sent to the "Vystrel" course (Regimental Commanders' Detachment).

Early in the Great Patriotic War, 30. On June 30, 1941, Major S. M. Fochkin completed the course and was appointed commander of the 148th Reserve Rifle Regiment of the Northwestern Front. In September, he assumed command of the 595th Rifle Regiment of the 188th Rifle Division, which, as part of the 27th and 34th Army of the same front, fought at the defense of Valdai. From 23 December 1941, the division was part of the 11th Army of the same front, and in January fought in the offensive in the direction of Staraya Russa. On 7 January 1942, the regiment under his command conducted a night march along the Lovov riverbed, breaking through German defences in a weak area, penetrating up to 40 km (25 mi) deep and capturing four settlements, capturing one hundred enemy soldiers. As a result of the offensive, he seized the Staraya Russa - Lychkovo railway and the Staraya Russa - Demjansk highway, cutting off the enemy's Demjansk group from supply bases. Subsequently, the division was on the defensive on the achieved line until the end of the summer of 1942. On 30 August 1942, he assumed command of the 144th Rifle Brigade of the 11th Army, in which capacity he was promoted to the rank of colonel on 19 September 1942. From 11 October he was at the disposal of the Military Council of the Northwestern Front, then in mid-November he was appointed commander of the 717th Rifle Regiment of the 170th Rifle Division.

On 27. December 1942 at Staraya Russa, he suffered a severe wound when shrapnel hit him in the back, as a result of which he was treated in hospital until April 1943, after which he was in the reserves of the Military Council of the North-Western Front. In June 1943, he was sent to study at the K. E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy. After completing its accelerated course, he was assigned to the disposition of the Military Council of the Far Eastern Front in April 1944. By order of 31 May 1944, Colonel Fochkin was appointed commander of the 158th Rifle Brigade, which was part of the 39th Rifle Corps and part of the 25th Army. From 22 November 1944, he was temporarily deputy commander of the 386th Rifle Division (formed on the basis of the 158th and 262nd Rifle Brigade) of the same army. The division was stationed in the village of Kraskino in the Khasansky district and engaged in combat training. From 13 March 1945, Colonel Fochkin was temporarily put in command of the 396th Rifle Division (Shimanovskaya Station).

During the Soviet-Japanese War in 1945, the division under his command took part in the Sungari offensive operation. Its troops forcibly crossed the Amur River, captured three towns on the opposite bank, and captured up to 1,000 Japanese soldiers and officers. Developing the offensive, after regrouping, the division participated in the capture of the Sun Fortified Area and the city of Sun, where it captured up to 20,000 enemy soldiers and officers. Subsequently, units of the division led the offensive at Mergen (Nunc-zian).

After the end of the war, from February 1946, he commanded the 22nd Rifle Division of the 137th Rifle Corps in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. From July 1947 he was at the disposal of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, then in September he was appointed Deputy Commander of the 27th Rifle Division. From April 1948 he served as deputy commander of the 38th Guards Rifle Brigade 9th Guards Rifle Corps in Lida, and from September 1949 in the same capacity in the 37th Guards Rifle Brigade 41st Rifle Corps in Postava. On 11 April 1953 he was transferred to the reserve.

The date and place of his death are unknown.
