Colonel Grigory Fyodorovich SHCHERBAKOV

Grigory Fyodorovich Shcherbakov was born on 5 January 1901 in the village of Fomkino, Seredinsky district of Volokolamsk district, Moscow gubernia, Russia.

During the Civil War, G. F. Shcherbakov was conscripted into the Red Army on 20 March 1920 by the Volokolamsk Regional Military Commissariat and assigned to the 1st Reserve Regiment in Smolensk. In April 1920, he was sent to the Western Front, where he fought in the 151st Rifle Regiment of the 17th Rifle Division. He took part in the battles of Borisov and Minsk. In July, during a sudden attack by white troops on G Company. F. Shcherbakov was captured and placed in a prisoner of war camp near Cracow. At the end of 1920 he was taken to a prison camp in Brest-Litovsk Fortress, where he contracted typhus and was in hospitals for three months. In May 1921 he escaped from captivity with a group of prisoners. In June in Minsk, after a short training in the 136th Rifle Regiment, he was assigned to the 12th Fighter Detachment to fight banditry in the Minsk Governorate. In November 1921, Shcherbakov was sent to the Gzhat communications courses on the Western Front. In June 1922 these courses were cancelled and he was transferred to the 43rd Infantry Command Course in Polotsk. After three months, however, this course was also disbanded, after which Shcherbakov continued his studies at the 81st Infantry Command Course in Minsk. In September 1923 he graduated and was assigned to the 41st Rifle Regiment of the 14th Rifle Division, stationed first in Moscow, then in Vladimir. In this regiment he was a squad leader, deputy commander and commander of a rifle platoon, commander of a platoon of the regimental school, company commander.

In June 1926 he was sent to study at the Kiev United Military Command Staff School. After its completion in August 1928, he was assigned to the 165th Rifle Regiment of the 55th Rifle Division, where he was acting platoon commander of the regimental school, company commander. In December 1929-June 1931 he served as an instructor of extra-military training of workers at the Belgorod Regional Military Commissariat, after which he was again transferred to the 165th Rifle Regiment as a company commander. In May 1932 he was transferred to the 163rd Rifle Regiment. He served in this regiment for more than five years. He was acting chief of staff and battalion commander, chief of the regimental school. In 1936, he was awarded a pocket watch as a reward for his achievements in combat training, which was a highly prized gift in the Soviet Union at that time.

Since September 1937, he was a teacher and senior tactics teacher at the Ryazan Infantry School. After the introduction of standard military ranks in the Red Army in September 1935, he was awarded the rank of major in 1938. In September 1939, Major Shcherbakov was appointed commander of the 612th Rifle Regiment of the 144th Rifle Division, which was forming in the Ivanovsk Oblast. In February-March 1940, he participated with this regiment in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. In June 1941, the division joined the 61st Rifle Corps20th Army, which was forming in the Oriol Military District.

The beginning of the Great Patriotic War found Major Shcherbakov in the same capacity. On 26 June 1941, the 144th Rifle Division, as part of the same corps and army, was assigned to the Stavka Army Group. Then, on 2 July 1941, it joined the Western Front with the army and took part in the Battle of Smolensk. The 612th Rifle Regiment distinguished itself in particular in the fighting from 17 to 19 July 1941 in the Rudno area of Smolensk. He decisively captured the southern part of Rudne, but was forced to retreat to his original positions as a result of a counterattack by enemy tanks and heavy bombardment by enemy aircraft. On 2 August 1941 the enemy pushed back parts of the neighbouring division, as a result of which the regiment was surrounded. Between 3 and 5 August 1941, thanks to the skillful and decisive leadership of Major Shcherbakov, he managed to break the encirclement and break through to his troops. For the fighting in the Rudnya-Ploskoye area, major Shcherbakov was drafted by the commander of the 20th Army general-lieutenant P. A. Kurochkin to be awarded the Order of Lenin (however, the award did not occur). In early October 1941, as part of the same 20th Army, the division took part in the Viazem Defensive Operation and was surrounded during it. After the army was disbanded in the same month, it became part of the 5th Army and took part in the defensive operations of the Battle of Moscow.

In late December 1941, Major Shcherbakov was hospitalized due to illness; after recovering in February 1942, he was sent to the Central-Asian Military District, where he formed the 236th Cadet Rifle Brigade. However, the formation was not completed, after which he returned to Moscow in early April for disposition to the Central Military District. In late April 1942, he was appointed acting commander of the 22nd Anti-Tank Fighter Brigade of the Stalingrad Military District, and from July1942 took part with it in the fighting on the Stalingrad Front. On 10 September 1942, he was appointed deputy commander of the 147th Rifle Division, which was engaged in heavy defensive fighting on the right bank of the Don River near Surovikino. In the course of these battles, the division was surrounded, suffered heavy losses and was withdrawn to replenish the live force in the Volga Military District. In 1942, half promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In January 1943, the division was sent to the Volkhov Front, where it joined the 2nd Shock Army and took part in the battles to break the blockade of Leningrad (Operation "Iskra"). During its deployment Lieutenant Colonel Shcherbakov temporarily commanded the 15th Rifle Regiment of the same division.

On January 29, 1943, he was wounded in combat and was in the hospital until March 18, 1943; after recovering, he returned to his former position as deputy commander of the division (at that time it was in reserve Volkhov Front). In mid-April, the 147th Rifle Division was moved by rail to the Livny area to the 27th Army. In the summer of 1943, as part of the troops of the Voronezh Front, it took part in the Battle of Kursk, the Belgorod-Kharkov Offensive. On 21.08.1943 Shcherbakov was promoted to the rank of colonel. On 25 August 1943, the division's troops seized the southern part of Akhtyrka, forcibly crossed the Vorskla River and, developing an offensive, captured Budy and Bielsk. By 16 September 1943, the division had reached the Vasilja-Ustimovka line. In early October 1943, Colonel Shcherbakov was appointed acting commander of the 253rd Rifle Division, which, as part of the 40th Army of the same front, fought to extend the bridgehead on the right bank of the Dnieper. From 10 October 1943 he formally commanded the 23rd Rifle Division, but did not actually take command until 28 October 1943. The division was at that time fighting heavy defensive and offensive battles to hold and extend the Dnepr bridgehead. In late October 1943, it was subordinated to the 38th Army and on 6 November 1943 it took part in the liberation of the Ukrainian capital. For her achievements in these battles, she was awarded the name "Kievska". Later, its units successfully operated on the Zhytomyr direction. In the fighting on the outskirts of Zhytomyr Colonel G. F. Shcherbakov was killed on Tuesday, November 9, 1943.
