Major-General Yakov Georgievich KOTELNIKOV

Yakov Georgievich Kotelnikov was born on 10 December 1892 in Krasnoslobodsk, now part of Mordvian.

Before being drafted into the army, J. G. Kotelnikov graduated in 1909 from a four-class city school in Krasnoslobodsk. After the outbreak of World War I in July 1914, he was mobilized for military service and assigned to the 536th Infantry Detachment in Penza, with which he went to Nakhichevan in Transcaucasia. In May 1916 he was assigned to the 218th Reserve Infantry Regiment at Tiflis, from where he was posted to the Tiflis School for Ensigns in July. On 14 November 1916, he graduated from it and was appointed a junior officer in the 601st Tobol Infantry, which guarded the Russian-Persian border on the Arazdayan-Ordubad section. In 1917 he was elected a member of the company and company committee. After the disbandment of the company in March 1918, he was sent to the headquarters of the Caucasian Military District, where he temporarily served as deputy chief adjutant of the infantry replenishment department. In July 1918 the circuit was disbanded and Kotelnikov was released to the reserve. His last rank in the tsarist army was lieutenant.

In the Civil War, he was drafted into the Red Army on 18 September 1918 and assigned to the 24th Rifle Division as regimental adjutant of the 213th Rifle Regiment. From November 1920 in the same division he served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the 71st Rifle Brigade, from June 1921 Junior and Senior Deputy Chief of Staff of the division, and from September Chief of Staff of the 71st Rifle Brigade. With the division he fought on the Eastern Front against the forces of Admiral A. V. Kolchak (at Simbirsk, Samara, Syzran, Buzuluk, Orenburg, Orsk, Belebey, Buguruslan, on the Belaya River, and at Verchneuralsk), in the winter and spring of 1920. He fought on the southeastern front with the troops of General A. I. Denikin, in the summer and autumn of 1921 he took part in fighting with the Poles on the Western Front (in the areas of Mozyr, Ovruch, Luck, on the Bug River, near Dubno and Iziaslav).

In late 1920 or in the first half of 1921 he fought against the Petlyurovtsy, bands of Tyutunnik, Khmar, Zabolotny, Lykho and others in the Podolia and Odessa gubernias, and also performed guard duties on the Romanian border. After the war, he continued to serve in the 24th Rifle Division as chief of staff of the 71st and 70th Rifle Regiments. From December 1928 to August 1929 he trained in the "Vystrel" courses, after returning to the division he temporarily commanded the 70th Rifle Regiment. In January 1931 he was transferred to the 17th Rifle Division as commander of the 51st Rifle Regiment. After the introduction of military ranks in the Red Army in September 1935, he was awarded the rank of colonel on 22 December 1935. In June 1938 he was appointed deputy commander of the 19th Rifle Division of the Oryol Military District, from October to February 1939 he temporarily commanded this division. From 19 August 1939, colonel Kotelnikov took command of the 120th Rifle Division, during the command of which he was promoted to the rank of kombrig on 4 November 1939. In February 1940 he was transferred to the post of commander of the 34th Reserve Rifle Brigade. On 4 June 1940, he was reclassified to the newly established rank of major-general. At the same time, from 15 May to 12 November 1940, he served as military commander of the town of Voronez. On 10 February 1941 he was appointed commander of the 19th Rifle Division.

On 25 June 1941, with the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the division was incorporated into the 30th Rifle Corps of Oryol Military District and in early July was transferred to the 28th Army. She was then transferred to the 24th Army Reserve Army Front and took part in the Battle of Smolensk on the Yelnin Line. On 1 August 1941, major-general Kotelnikov was removed from command and arrested by the NKVD. He was released at the end of September, but did not return to the division and remained at the headquarters of the 24th Army. In early October 1941, during the Viazem Defensive Operation, his troops had to endure heavy fighting under siege. On 7 October 1941, Kotelnikov assumed command of the detachment and organized the defense of Semlevo to ensure the withdrawal of troops moving from Dorogobuzha and Podmosje via Semlevo to Vyazma. Then for several days with the same detachment he fought heavy battles in the Panfilovo area and secured the retreat of the troops of the 24th Army. He then attempted to break through the encirclement and move to his. In the last attack on 14 October 1941, major-general Kotelnikov fell. However, he was officially listed as missing in action.

In 2018, a Kurgan search expedition in the Smolensk region near the village of Krasnoye Troshino discovered the remains in uniform with general's insignia. They also discovered an epaulet star, buttons and a block for fastening the medal, without the medal itself. After cleaning the finds, it turned out that the insignia and buttons with the coat of arms of the USSR belonged to a member of the army with the rank of general. For identification, a search of the archives was carried out, during which it was assumed that the insignia belonged to Yakov Kotelnikov. Genetic expertise confirmed this assumption. The searchers found the descendants of the general, and the DNA comparison made it possible to accurately name the deceased. General Kotelnikov's personal belongings were handed over to his granddaughter.

On September 18, 2018, General Kotelnikov's remains were buried at the "Bogoroditskoye field" monument in the village of Bogoroditskoye in Smolensk Oblast.
