19th Rifle Division

19th Rifle Division

In September 1939, at the bases of the individual regiments of the 19th Rifle Division was formed 120th Rifle Division and 149th Rifle Division. A new 19th Rifle Division was formed on the basis of its 55th Rifle Regiment.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, it had the 32nd, 282nd, 315th Rifle, 90th Artillery, and 103rd Howitzer Artillery Regiments in its composition.

The division first entered combat with Nazi forces on 19 July 1941 near the town of Jelnia as part of the 24th Army Western Front. It took part in the Yelnyan offensive operation, the Battle of Moscow, the Rzhev-Vyazd offensive operation in 1942, the Rzhev-Sychev offensive operation, the Kharkov defensive operation in 1943, the Belgorod-Kharkov offensive operation, and the Poltava-Kremenchug offensive operation, Piatichat Offensive Operation, Bereznegovato-Snigirov Offensive Operation, Odessa Offensive Operation, Kishinev-Ismael Offensive Operation, Belgrade Offensive Operation of 1944, Dierzh Offensive Operation, Bratislava-Brnian Offensive Operation.

Units of the division participated in the liberation of the towns of Jelnia, Ruza, Krasnohrad, Bobrinets, Bratislava, the Bulgarian town of Shumen (liberated on 9 September 1944). For the exemplary performance of command tasks on the territory of Bulgaria, the division was awarded the honorary title "Shumen" on 27 September 1944. They forcibly crossed the rivers Seversky Donets, Ingulets, Dniester, Prut, Southern Bug, Dnieper and Danube. During the Belgrade Operation, the division entered Yugoslav territory on 7 October 1944, crossed the Danube near Apatin in November, and fought fierce battles with the Nazis on its left bank in difficult conditions of mountainous and wooded terrain. For the courage and military prowess shown in these battles, she was awarded the Order of Suvorov 2nd degree on 6 January 1945.

In 1945, units of the division fought in Hungary and Czechoslovakia as part of the 46th and 7th Guards Army. For distinguishing itself in the fighting during the liberation of Bratislava, the division was awarded the Order of the red Banner on 17 May 1945.

The war division ended on 11 May 1945 on the banks of the Vltava River near the town of Benesov.

In June 1946, the division was reformed into the 11th Rifle Brigade.

All internet sources state that major Utvenko was the commander of the division from 02.10.1941. However, the attached division combat report dated 02.08.1941 indicates that he was already commander at that time. Which also agrees with the data in the biography of the then division commander major-general Kotelnikov, which was removed from command on 01.08.1941 and arrested by NKVD.
