After the end of World War II, the Hungarian army was already in the process of re-creation under the influence of the Soviet Union. Soviet tractors M-2 (MAZ Yaroslavl) (50 pcs) and Stalinec (type?) Were purchased for artillery units under the agreement of July 8, 1949 on the purchase of military equipment. (60 pcs). Despite these deliveries, these numbers were insufficient and therefore the Hungarians decided to develop and manufacture their own tractor. Ernová Kovácsházy, a designer known from the war production of tanks and self-propelled works, was commissioned to design Turán/ Zrinyí/ Tas. His collaborators were Baliga István and Kozma László. They were given the task of creating a new design of the tractor, which would be based on the Soviet M-2. The M-2 itself, as well as the later Csepel 800, were based on the Soviet light tank platform T-70, resp. self-propelled gun SU-76. The Hungarians obtained a license for the Austrian diesel engine Saurer D-613, which became the propulsion unit Csepel 800. The wheels of the chassis were suspended by torsion bars. Although the tractor was a Csepel project, it could not manufacture it due to capacity reasons. A new Red Star tractor plant (Vörös Csillag Traktorgyár) in Gödöllő was commissioned to produce. Between 1955 and 1958, the factory delivered a total of 400 tractors. The tractors served in the Hungarian army until the second half of the 1980s. Subsequently, they were sold to civilian organizations. One Csepel 800 served as a film prop in the American-Yugoslav-Italian co-production Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission.
Interestingly, the platform of this tractor was used for the armored personnel carrier project KR-13.
