Ariete AMV (Aggiornamento di Mezza Vita - mid-life modernization) is a tank modernization project C1 Ariete. As part of the modernization, the power of the powertrain is increased (to 1119 kW - per prototype achieved by modernizing the original FIAT-Iveco 12V MTCA engine to the Iveco V12 AMV variant by increasing the working volume from 25.8 to 30 liters - by replacing cylinders and pistons and crankshaft - and cylinder stroke) combined with a new transmission (IVECO/ZF LG-3000) and belts (20% wider) and an improved braking system. The modernization project also includes a new aiming system and fire control system, along with the modernization of the communication and navigation system, with many of the electronic equipment elements being taken from the Centauro II fire support wheeled vehicle. The project also increases tank protection by installing additional modular turret protection and new smoke grenade launchers, modifications to the mass destruction protection system, and replacing the original 7.62mm MG3 machine gun on the tower with a 12.7mm M2NV machine gun.
The contract for the development of a modernization project and the production of three prototypes for testing was concluded in 2019 with the CIO consortium (Consorzio Iveco OTO Melara), which was founded by Leonardo and Iveco. If the proposed modernization project meets the requirements of the Italian Armed Forces, about 130 of the 200 tanks produced could be upgraded C1 Ariete.
The first modernized prototype (Ariete AMV PT1) was 27.01.2022 handed over to the Centro Polifunzionale di Sperimentazione Mobile (CEPOLISPE - Multifunctional Mobile Technology Testing Center). Only modifications to the propulsion system are implemented on this prototype. The modernization of the tower and weapon system is still ongoing (February 2022) and will be implemented on the prototype PT2, which should be delivered for testing in mid-2022. The third prototype PT3, representing a completely modernized tank, should be delivered in January 2023.
