Major-General Yakov Afanasievich Panichkin

Yakov Afanasievich Panichkin was born on October 16, 1899 in Petrograd.

During the First World War he worked as a turner in Schmidt's workshops and also in a metal shop in Petrograd. In May 1916 he was expelled from Petrograd for his participation in the revolutionary movement and as a member of a fighting group (for distributing illegal literature about the armed May Day movement and attempting to murder the head of the gendarmerie department, Count Radishchev). After the February Revolution of 1917 he returned to Petrograd and again found work in the Petrograd metal works, at the same time being a member of the Red Guard detachment in the factory. He took part in the Bolshevik October Revolution and in the attack on the Winter Palace.

After the October Revolution, he joined the Petrograd Teachers' Detachment of the Red Guard, then on 7 December 1917 he went with one of the detachments to the Southern Front to suppress the anti-Soviet uprising in the Don region. Here he was in the detachments of Vasiliev, Polubanov, A. V. Mokrousov and I. F. Fedko. He took part in battles with the White Guard detachments of Generals L. G. Kornilov and A. M. Kaledin. He was wounded in the leg at Taganrog in January 1918, and after returning from hospital until May 1918 he was a private in the detachments of I. F. Fedko and A. V. Mokrousov in Crimea. After the surrender of Kerch, he was unable to evacuate and remained in the city (hiding from the Germans, Petlyurovs and White Guards in Crimea, as well as in the area of Melitopol, Alexandrovsk and Pavlograd).

In August 1918 J. A. Panichkin joined the rebel detachment of N. I. Makhno and was a private and junior commander in it. From January 1919 he served as a junior commander and platoon commander in the 1st Novospasov Regiment of the 3rd Zadneprov Brigade N. I. Makhno (by this time the "Makhnovists" had defected to the Red Army). He took part in the fighting against the Austro-German invaders, the White Guard units of Generals A. I. Denikin and A. G. Shkura at Taganrog and Mariupol. He was wounded twice in the process. He was treated in hospitals in Nikopol, Cherkassy and Kiev. After his recovery, he was enrolled in the junior commanders' course at the headquarters of the 12th Army (from October 1919 - the Red Commanders' School). In April 1920 he was appointed Chief of Infantry Reconnaissance in the 3rd International Regiment58th Rifle Division. In May-June 1920 he took part with this division in the fighting with the Polish Army on the south-western front. At Kiev he was wounded and evacuated to hospital, after recovering from August 1920 he served as second-in-command and company commander in the 11th Reserve Battalion in Poltava. In September, with a marching company, he went to the Southern Front to fight against the troops of General P. N. Wrangel. In the 78th Rifle Regiment 9th Rifle Division, he took part in the fighting with Wrangel's troops in Crimea as a company commander. In February 1921, with the same 9th Rifle Division, he took part in the Tiflis operation to overthrow the government of the Georgian Democratic Republic and establish Soviet power. In the autumn of 1921 he was sent for training to the "Vystrel" courses. In August 1923 he was appointed platoon leader in the 9th Sumy Infantry Courses named after N. A. Shchors. In May 1924 he was transferred to the 67th Rifle Regiment 23rd Rifle Division, where he served as deputy company commander, head of sapper training, company commander, deputy battalion commander, and junior staff company commander. In December 1929 he was transferred to the headquarters of the same 23rd Rifle Division, where he served as chief of the 1st and 2nd sections.

In 1930-1931 he was on reconnaissance courses at the headquarters of the Red Army, in 1933-1935 he studied at the evening department of the Frunze Military Academy of the Red Army at the Kharkiv Regional House of the Red Army. After the introduction of military ranks in the Red Army in 1935, he was awarded the rank of major. In May 1937, he was major J. A. Panichkin was appointed commander of a separate reconnaissance battalion of the same 23rd Rifle Division Charkov Military District, and from May 1938 he assumed command of the 69th Rifle Regiment.
