The 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion was formed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 15 December 1941. She disembarked in Cherbourg harbor on 7 September 1944, armed with M18 Hellcat fighter tanks. It entered combat operations on 20 November 1944 near the town of Prummern. On 22 December he is moved to the vicinity of Rochefort, Belgium. He crosses the Rour River in February 1945. Reaches the Elbe River near Wittenberg on 24 April 1945.


The 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion was attached to the 84th Infantry Division

The battalion was armed with M18 Hellcat tank fighters. Based on the experience of the war, it was decided to discontinue the construction of tank fighter forces. As part of this process, the battalion was inactivated at Fort Benning on 7 November 1945. It was subsequently converted and renumbered on 5 August 1946 as the 452nd Field Artillery Battalion / 452nd Field Artillery Detachment.
