V 6/1943 Col. Gen. Heinz Guderian presented the specifications for a new multi-purpose tank. It was to be a standardized platform VK 28.01 "Mehrzweckfahrzeug", which was intended to prevent the fragmentation of war production among the myriad types of German armoured vehicles. It was essentially intended to replace the medium tank platform in production Pz.Kpfw. IV. The design plans, among other things, envisaged the use of this versatile platform VK 28.01 also in the form of a tank fighter. There were a pair of designs that differed in chassis layout.

The first draft shown on drawing W1485 is dated 13.9.1943. The chassis of the vehicle has six travelling wheels of 600 mm diameter and a trio of supporting pulleys. The superstructure is open at the top. The available TTDs are in the table above.

The second design shown on drawing W1486 is dated 6.10.1943. It is essentially identical in design, the only difference being in the chassis arrangement, which consists of six larger diameter running wheels that overlap each other (similar to the Panther and Tiger tanks).
