Brief history
The Russian word: basurmanin (басурманин) is a corruption of muslim (мусульманин), later the Russians used this to refer to most of the Jinn believers. Now "basurmanin" has become the fighting name of the BMP-1AM.
There were reportedly 20,000 infantry fighting vehicles produced in the Soviet Union between 1966 and 1983. Of which the BMP-1 type is still in the armament of the army of the Russian Federation in the number of about 500 machines. Therefore, it was decided to modernize them. It has not yet been specified how many modernized BMP-1AMs the Russian army will need.
As of February 2, 2022, such vehicles are included in the service of the Russian army.
The Sverdlovsk-based Uralmashzavod factory is expecting interest from abroad, as these vehicles are used by almost forty armies.
The BMP-1AM project has major shortcomings related to passive crew protection and airborne protection. Combat experience has shown that the BMP can be eliminated by almost all anti-tank systems as well as by exploding land mines and firing large-calibre machine guns.
Clearly, BMP upgrades are only a temporary solution to bridge the 10 to 12 year period before rearmament occurs.
