During World War II, the English suffered from a shortage of supply vehicles and artillery tractors with high throughput in difficult terrain. The British army lacked suitable tractors for its 17-pound and 25-pound cannons and light anti-aircraft cannons. After capturing several German artillery tractors Sd.Kfz.7 the idea arose to create a similar half-track tractor. However, it was not a copy. The vehicle was completely designed by Vauxhall Motors. It was a vehicle whose parts were made in English, the steering wheel was on the right side and used standard parts from the production of Bedford trucks. The most similar part of the vehicle was its crawler chassis. But even that was not identical with its German counterpart. The vehicle was equipped with a pair of English 6-cylinder Bedford engines. The vehicle was named Bedford BT (Bedford Tractor), respectively. "Traclat" (Tracked Light Artillery Tractor). The six prototypes produced were assigned serial numbers H6264328 to H6264333. They were given the white designation BT1 - BT6 on the side of the engine body. The prototypes underwent extensive testing. This was extremely favorable for the construction and extensive series production was planned (1944 - 7,500 pieces and in 1945 another 5,000 pieces). However, the whole program was interrupted by the end of the war and the program was stopped in 6/1945. However, in 7/1946 the prototypes took part in comparative tests in the competition for a new artillery tractor. His supporters were designs of artillery tractors Crusader Gun Tractor and a tractor using a platform of a self-propelled gun Alecto. Traclat overcame both competing proposals, but due to post-war efforts to save money, the program for the development and introduction of a new artillery tractor was canceled.
