Members of the 75th Ranger Regiment participating in the Swift Response exercise in August 1915 at the German training area Hohenfels.
The soldier in the foreground is armed with an M240L machine gun, a lightweight variant of the standard M240B, which is particularly suitable for airborne forces. Thanks to new manufacturing techniques and the use of titanium, it is 18% lighter than the M240B. The weapon is equipped with a folding stock, and although it has a shorter barrel, it achieves the same performance as the M240B.
The U.S. Army has begun replacing its M240B machine guns with the new M240L, but the Marine Corps has not yet adopted this weapon because of its high cost.
