Tatyana S. Marinenko - Partisan Intelligence

(1918 - 1942)

Soviet Heroine

She was born in 1918 in the village of Zelenki near Polotsk. She graduated from a pedagogical school and became a high school teacher. From the first days of occupation she participated in the work of the illegal Komsomol organization in Polotsk and helped found the first partisan detachment in the vicinity of the city, later called "The Elusive".

In the summer of 1942, she became an intelligence officer for the detachment and was given the task of maintaining contact with the underground movement in the city and gathering information for the partisans. Her greatest achievement was the capture of a copy of a plan for punitive operations against the Polka partisans, drawn up by the city commander. The Gestapo then intensified its search for the daring intelligence officer nicknamed "Vasilek" and soon, with the help of a traitor, managed to come on her trail. In early August 1942, the Gestapo arrested her during a visit to her home village in Polotsk. She was subjected to cruel torture, yet she did not betray anyone from the illegal organization. On the contrary, she managed to write in her own blood on a piece of cloth and send from prison a last report to the partisans, where she gave the name of the traitor and those who were threatened with arrest on the basis of his denunciation.

On May 8, 1965, the partisan T. S. Marininka was additionally awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in memoriam
and a memorial plaque with a bronze bust of her was placed on the building of the Higher Pedagogical School in Polotsk.
