Since there was already very good experience with skiers and ski units in the Winter War of Finland and the USSR and also during the Eastern Campaign, it was decided to create several ski units within the Waffen-SS. Especially the Nordic nations were suitable for this purpose.

In October 1942, when the German recruitment campaign in Norway was at its peak, and at the same time the Quisling recruitment campaign, about 200 men who were excellent skiers signed up for Waffen-SS service. From these men, the SS Ski-Jäger-Bataillon " Norwegen" or also "Norge" was formed. Even though the number of men did not absolutely correspond to the German Bataillon, i.e. battalion, it was decided to form a battalion.

The initial training took place in the town of Sennheim, Norway. Thereafter, the unit was loosely affiliated with the newly formed 6th SS Mountain Division Nord and fought primarily in Finnish Karelia.

Uniforms:
The standard ranks of the SS or Polizei-SS were worn within the 6th Division, and this was also the case among the members of the ski battalion. The standard SS uniform was worn, plus a armband with the inscription "Norge" or "Frw. Legion Norwegen". Furthermore, as an attached unit to the Mountain Division, members of the unit were entitled to wear an Edelweiss patch on the upper right sleeve - later there was a mix-up and the metal Edelweiss badge from Heer was worn, or still the SS patch.

The unit was commanded by former Norwegian Rikshird SS-Obersturmführer Gust Jonassen.

The unit was transferred back to Norway in May 1943. Although the two-year tour had not yet expired, the battalion was disbanded in September of that year.
