After the failures of the 20-ton tank projects of Daimler Benz (VK 20.01 (D)) and Krupp(VK 20.01 (K)), involved Oberbaurat Kniepkamp in early 1940 and the company M.A.N. had a draft of its tank design ready on 10.10.1940. The platform used the Schachtellaufwerk concept of interlaced running wheels and the suspension was provided, unlike its competitors (Daimler Benz and Krupp) by torsion bars. After the first design of the new tank, VK 20.01 (M), M.A.N. was awarded a new contract for a modified version of the VK 20.02(M) by WaPrüf 6 at the turn of 1940/41.
A company report M.A.N. dated 18 August 1941 stated that three development platforms and 12 experimental chassis were under development. The platform was to consist of six interlaced wheels (Schachtellaufwerk) with a diameter of 880 mm. After the invasion of the Soviet Union by German troops and clashes with modern Soviet tanks, further German development was influenced by them. By then the conventional square shapes were obsolete, modern machine shapes with obliquely welded armour plates were promoted á T-34. Therefore, the VK 20.02 (M) design was modified during the development phase. The new design of the machine was captured by drawing no. Tu 13947 and bears the characteristic features of the later production form of the tank Pz.Kpfw. V "Panther".
The project was not completed, evolving into subsequent projects VK 24.01 (M), VK 30.01(M), VK 30.02 (M) up to the production Panther.
