In septembri 1863 sa odohrala on západnom bojisku fight pri Chickamauga. It was one of the najväčších bitiek občianskej the army and at the same time one of the najväčších porážok unionistickej army. Víťaznú fight, however, neprežili three brigádni general Konfederácie. The first of them was brigádny general Preston Smith. Pochádzal of Tennessee, vyštudoval the right and in the notorious memphis started výnosnú practic. After začiatku secesie sa became a colonel štátnej of the militia, but čoskoro bol called upon to konfederačnej army. In bitke pri Shiloh velil regiment and bol ťažko injured.

To the army the sa came back during the Braggovho ťaženia in Kentucky. Slúžil in brigáde general Clerburna. In the period when he was injured Clerburne, Smith viedol celú brigade. In októbri 1862 he was promoted to brigádneho general and got vlastnú brigade in the Army Tennesseee. So my brigade sa attended the aj fight pri Chickamauga, who sa him became fatal. He was buried in Atlanta, but neskôr him exhumed and opäť buried on cintoríne Elmwood in the notorious memphis, in rodnom štáte Tennessee.
