Special units of the Reich SS leadership
Sondertruppen der Reichsführung-SS
In September 1944, the SS heavy tank, artillery, anti-aircraft and rocket launcher units were removed from the subordination of individual SS corps and continued to be run as Special Units of the Reich SS leadership. In connection with this, they were renumbered; they now bore numbers from 500 upwards instead of the previous 100 and above. Only the liaison units remained under the direct command of the SS corps. The reason for this move was the previous arbitrariness of the corps commanders in organizing these units, not infrequently against the orders of the SS Main Command Office.
Other formations such as command liaison regiments, geologists, hunting battalions and others were also part of the Special Units of the Reich SS leadership.
