Brigadier John Alan Lyde Caunter was born on 17.12.1889 at Banwell, Somerset as a son of GP Richard Lawrence Caunter and Johanna Wilhelmina Koerber.

His first education received at Uppingham School and subsequently at Royal Military College, Sandhurst. After graduation he received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant to Gloucestershire Regiment (Hart Centre Archives). In next time he serves with regiment at Bombay, India and 1911 is promoted to Lieutenant.

At the outbreak of the WWI, in 1914 he served with 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment at Bordon, Hampshire and with this unit also went in autumn to the battlefields in France and Belgium.

Shortly after arriving to the European battlefields, on October 31, 1914 he was captured near Gheluveld. Subsequently, he is held as POW in the Crefeld prisoners camp and after that at Schwarmstedlt, Hanover. From this camp in summer 1917 he managed to escape. On his escape, meets two more British soldiers and after some time, manages to reach the Dutch border (neutral country) and return to the UK on July 7, 1917. After his return, he gets an audience with HRH King George V (Smith, 2016). In 1918 Captain Caunter wrote and subsequently published his adventures from captivity under the title "13 days an escape from a German prison". During this period, he receives his first Military Cross.



He served from 1917 with the Salonika Army, Macedonia and Turkey, and in 1918 he received his bar to Military Cross. In 1918, he became a staff officer (GSO3) the Salonika Army. He holds this office until 1920, when is posted to the same position with the 6th Division (Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force) at Iraq (Hart Centre Archives).

In 1923, he completes his studies at the Staff College and in the following period worked as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General, British Army of the Rhine and 1927 he graduated at Senior Officers School, Sheerness. After complete of studies he returns to the staff duties as GSO2 of the Northern Command (Hart Centre Archives).

In period of years 1930-1933 he holds office as the Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General, Northern Ireland District.

In 1935, he became the commander of the 1st Battalion (Light), Royal Tank Corps, Egypt and he held this post until 1939, when he commanded the 1st Army Tank Brigade as Acting Brigadier for period of months July - October the same year (Generals).

From November 1939, was him given command of the Heavy Armoured Brigade in Egypt, with which he participate in the North African campaign.
