Stíhací peruť 017 / VF-17 [1943-1946]


Eskadra VF-17 byla zformována 1. 1. 1943. Byla známa jako "Jolly Roger", "Skull and Crossbones", nebo také jako "Blackburn´s Irregulars". Její výzbroj (1943) tvořily letouny F4U Corsair a jejím velitelem byl John T. Blackburn. Jejím symbolem je černý prapor s bílou lebkou a zkříženými hnáty.


Od 27. října do 1. prosince 1943 eskadra působila ze základny Ondonga na Šalamounových ostrovech (New Georgia). Bojovou činnost VF-17 zahájila 29. října 1943. Od 25. ledna do 4. března 1944 eskadra působila ze základny Piva Yoke na ostrově Bougainville. Za přibližně pět měsíců piloti VF-17 sestřelili 156 nepřátelských letadel, zničili 5 lodí a to vše při ztrátě pouhých 12 svých kolegů.


Od června (???) 1944 výzbroj VF-17 tvořily letouny F6F Hellcat a eskadra působila z USS Hornet (CV-12).
