The T-72BA (Object 184A) is an upgrade of the T-72B tanks carried out as part of overhauls at the concern's Uralvagonzavod plants between 1998 (prototype) and 2005. The modernization was aimed at improving the tank's combat capabilities in three areas - firepower, crew protection and mobility. In addition to the T-72BA version, a T-72BA1 (Object 184A1) version is also known, which does not have the 9K120 Svir anti-tank kit implemented. The upgraded Object 184A prototype successfully passed military trials in 1999. There are several different modernization series, differing in the modernizationi elements used. Almost all T-72BA tanks deployed in the Russian Armed Forces had tracks from the T-90 tank.

The first series of tanks were upgraded in 1999-2000. These tanks are distinguished by:
- Complete dynamic protection Kontakt supplemented with some elements from Kontak-5,
- 1A40-1 fire control system with DVE-BS (ДВЕ-БС) atmospheric sensor,
- 2E42-4 gun stabilizer (2Э42-4),
- V-84MS engine.

Tanks upgraded in 2000-2002 had the following changes:
- Kontakt-5 dynamic protection kit,
- 1A40-1M fire control system with passive infrared sight.

In 2003, extensive modifications were made and the tanks upgraded in the following years were characterized by:
- A new V-92S2 engine, along with a redesigned (strengthened) transmission, new aluminum radiators, and improved air filtration,
- the 3EC13-1 fire protection system,
- more powerful chassis dampers,
- improved infrared masking capability,
- Abzac communications system (radio R-173, R-173P receiver, and R-174 indoor talker with new antenna filters).

In 2005, the fire control system was replaced with a new 1A40-M2 system. This system was replaced on tanks in service in 2011 by the Sosna-U system, which is similar to the Kalina fire control system used on T-90AM tanks. All T-72BA series tanks are equipped with the 9K120 Svir anti-tank set with PTRS 9M119 and 9M119M.

Upgrading the T-72BA is not the best the Russian armouries could offer to the army. But it's a relatively reasonable compromise between improved combat capabilities and available funding. Although the absence of some modern features (e.g. panoramic sight, automatic transmission) reduce its combat value compared to other tank modernisations of similar category, on the other hand, this modernisation returned to service tanks that otherwise would have ended up in the scrap heap due to their technical condition (the technical condition of the tanks to be modernised corresponds to the higher overall cost of the modernisation, as many of the tanks to be modernised were, according to the words of memoirists, literally looted, with moss, grass and even bushes growing on the outside of them).

In 2005, the T-72BA tanks were in the armament of a total of 8 tank battalions, included in the line-up of the 81st Motorized Artillery and 152nd Tank Regiment of the 27th Motorized Artillery Division and the 276th Motorized Artillery and 239th Tank Regiment of the 34th Motorized Artillery Division. By 2021, the Ground Forces of the Russian Armed Forces had only two tank battalions with these tanks - one in the formation of the 488th Motorized Artillery Regiment of the 144th Motorized Artillery Division and the other in the formation of the 21st Motorized Artillery Brigade. A few examples are still in units of pieces in the tank battalions of the 90th Panzer Division and the 35th and 60th Motorized Artillery Brigades. In 2015-2016, T-72BA tanks began to appear in tank units of the Kazakh Armed Forces, gradually forming the armament of a total of 6 tank battalions by 2021. However, the T-72BA tanks in Kazakhstan are equipped with older types of tracks from the T-72B.
