On October 25, 1942, Lt. Cogner, then serving with VMF-212, shot down 3 Zeros during a dogfight. When he equaled the fourth in his sights, piloted by ace Petty Officer 2nd Class Shiro Ishikawa, he used the last of his ammunition on it, but Ishikawa kept flying. So he decided to use the propeller to cut off the tail. But Cogner misjudged the speed and instead of doing damage, he rammed Ishikawa's Zero. Both planes crashed into the water and both parachuted out.


The Marine rescue boat first picked up Cogner, and then Cogner convinced them not to kill Ishikawa. When Cogner held out his hand to help him out of the water and onto the boat, Ishikawa pulled out his Nambu pistol, pointed it at Cogner and pulled the trigger, but the pistol failed, scaring Cogner so badly that he fell and injured his back. Ishikawa then tried to shoot himself, but the gun failed again. Cogner then hit Ishikawa over the head with a canister and pulled him onto the boat.


Shiro Ishikawa thus became the first Zero pilot to be captured by the Allies.
