Major-General Yakov Andreevich Ishchenko

He was born 31.12.1896 in the village of Pisky Radkivski. Ukrainian. He was in the Russian tsarist army from August 1915, fought in the First World War. He first served in the 37th Reserve Battalion in Yekaterinoslav, where he graduated from the training group in 1916 and was promoted to junior non-commissioned officer. However, when he was sent to the front, he escaped, was captured and demoted to lance corporal. He was sent to the 170th Infantry Regiment of the 43rd Infantry Division on the Southwest Front, fighting in the Carpathian Mountains. He took part in the revolutionary events of 1917, was elected to the regimental soldiers' committee after the February Revolution, and was chairman of the company committee.

He took part in the Russian Civil War. In April 1918, he joined a partisan detachment near Izhum, the same year the detachment joined the Red Army and became part of the 12th Ukrainian Soviet Regiment. From October 1918 he was military commander of the Izhum, from November 1918 military commissar of the 2nd Izhum Reserve Rifle Regiment, from February 1919 assistant to the Izhum district military commissar. From May 1919 he fought on the southern and south-western fronts: commander of the strike working battalion of the 14th Army in Izyum, battalion commander of the 396th Rifle Regiment of the 41st Rifle Division, from July 1919 he commanded this regiment, then commanded the 123rd Rifle Brigade. During the Civil War, he fought against German-Austrian invaders in southwestern Russia, against the Hajduks and Petlyurovs, against the troops of General A. I. Denikin and against Polish troops.

He proved to be a very brave commander, was awarded the Order of the Red Banner (24.02.1921) and on the 10th anniversary of the Red Army in 1928 he was awarded a second Order of the Red Banner. He commanded the 3rd Regiment from January 1921 and the 195th Regiment of the 41st Independent Rifle Brigade from April. He took an active part in the fight against banditry in Kharkov Gubernia. From August 1921 he was assistant military commissar in Izhum, from December 1921 military commissar of Kupyansk oblast. From June 1923 - Yevpatoria city military commissar, from July 1924 again Kupyansky district military commissar. From August 1926 to November 1929 - military commissar of Sumy district.

In 1930 he graduated from the III Rifle and Tactical Courses of the Comintern "Vystrel" for the improvement of the command corps of the RKKA. Immediately after their graduation he was sent to study at the Red Army Military Academy of M. V. Frunze, which he graduated in 1934. From May 1934 he was the commander of the 89th Rifle Regiment of the 30th Rifle Division. After the introduction of ranks in the Red Army, he was given the rank of colonel on 29 January 1936. Since June 1937 - commander of the 15th Rifle DivisionCharkov Military District stationed in the city of Nikolayev. On June 15, 1937, he was promoted to the rank of brigade commander (kombrig).

On February 27, 1938, kombrig J. A. Ishchenko was arrested in Kiev, where he was on a business trip. He was accused of a series of crimes: organizing an anti-Soviet military conspiracy, collaboration with Ukrainian nationalists, illegal spending of funds (during Ishchenko's tenure as commander of the 89th Rifle Regiment of the 30th Rifle Division and the 15th Rifle Division). The arrest was made on the basis of a denunciation written by K. D. Kapulovsky, Chief of Staff of the 89th Rifle Regiment, Yevstigneyev and I. P. Boyko, deputy regimental commander for logistics. Ishchenko confessed to embezzlement but did not admit to counterrevolutionary activity. He was released from the Red Army on March 3, 1938.

Ishchenko was held in a prison in Dnepropetrovsk and during interrogations pointed to documents and specific persons who refuted the accusations of his counterrevolutionary activity. The military prosecutor of the Kharkov Military District, brigade military lawyer M. G. Grezov, was forced to withdraw the charges of anti-Soviet activity and reclassify them as abuse of office, but on 14 December 1939, Y. A. Ishchenko was finally released by decision of the Special Department of the Kharkov Military District (the case was closed on 8 December). At the end of January 1940 he was re-admitted to cadre service in the Red Army, but for a long time he remained without a new appointment. In June 1940 he was appointed chief of the Sukhom Rifle and Machine Gun School, which he headed until March 1941. On 4 June 1940 he was appointed to the rank of major-general.

From 14 March 1941 he was commander of the 138th Mountain Rifle Division. In June 1944, he was sent to the Polish Army, where he was promoted to Brigadier General. On August 8, 1944, the High Command of the Polish Army appointed him to the post of Chief of the rear of the Polish Army. By 15 October, he had organized the Chief Intendant's Service of the Polish Army and served as Chief Intendant of the Polish National Army.
