Infanterie-Regiment 421 was renamed Grenadier-Regiment 420 in October 1942, it was further subordinated to 125. infantry division.
In late January 1944, the regiment suffered heavy losses at Nikopol during the Soviet Dnieper-Carpathian Operation and was disbanded.
The surviving members were formed into Regimental Group 421.
