The single-hook container carrier (with CHU module - Container Handling Unit) M1120 LHS was created within the project HEMTT overhaul/rebuild program, in which older M977 trucks were rebuilt using single-hook Multilift container carriers Mark V (currently MPH165-LHS). In addition to dismantling the original superstructures and assembling the elements of the single-hook carrier, there were also other changes to the chassis, including improvements to the rear axle suspension. The first rebuilt vehicles were introduced at the end of 1999, with series production (sometimes referred to as the M1120A0) starting in 2002.


In 2004, another modernization was introduced and introduced into series production, referred to as M1120A2 (newly manufactured vehicles), resp. M1120A2R1 (vehicles created by modernization of older models). In 2008 (2010?), The latest version, called the M1120A4, went into production.


The M1075 anti-missile system launcher THAAD is derived from the M1120.


In addition to the series-produced versions, Oshkosh also introduced a technology demonstrator called the M1120A3, which uses a diesel-electric drive. Its serial production was not realized.
