History:
In 1937, after the introduction of aircraft Mitsubishi Ki-21-I Sally, the Air Force Command issued new specifications for the new heavy bomber and the Nakajima Hikóki Kabushiki Kaisha factory was invited to enter the competition. That was compensation for the previous contract. As a result, the first Nakajima Ki-49-I Donryu aircraft began landing at Chinese airports in August 1941. They were graceful aircraft, which were relatively fast (this was a requirement and speed to protect these bombers from enemy fighters), agile, with protective fuel tank covers and armor to protect the crew, and also relatively well armed.


Operational deployment:
Donryu underwent a baptism of fire in China and lasted there until the end of the war in the Ki-49-I version. Soon after the war began, Donryu reached almost every battlefield, such as Australia, New Britain, New Guinea, the Philippines and Burma. The idea of speed as an effective protection on these new battlefields soon fell apart when Donryu carried 1000 kg of bombs, was overloaded and slow, so in the spring of 1942 began to produce Ki-49-IIa.
In short, he fell behind quickly and soon became disappointed, only successful in China.
