The Tracked Rapier short-range anti-aircraft missile system is designed to destroy aerial targets at ranges from 400 to 6,800 m at altitudes up to 3,000 m flying at speeds up to 340 m/s. In the early 1990s, the Mk2 missile was developed, backward compatible with older launchers, with altitude range increased to 5000 m and long-range to 8200 m.

Development of a version of the PLRK Rapier, where all components would be mounted on a single tracked chassis, began in 1974. The vehicle was intended for anti-aircraft defence of tank units armed with Chieftain tanks. Iran was interested in this vehicle and the vehicle was unveiled in 1977 at the Paris Exhibition. Although series production began in 1978, full development was not completed even when the Islamic Revolution broke out in Iran and the vehicles produced remained in Britain and were eventually purchased by the British Army, which took delivery of the first vehicles in early 1981. Eventually 72 sets were inducted into the British Armed Forces, with the first unit reaching operational capability in 1983.

The TRLV (Tracked Rapier Launch Vehicle) has the designation RCM-748 and uses a M548 transporter chassis.
