Infantry-Division Hamburg was destroyed (in addition to the staff and the coupling section) in the so-called ruhrském boiler (Ruhrkessel), in which were lodged in the american encirclement of the unit 5. tank army and 15. army. Staff of the division and the connecting section were used as the basis for the Division z.b.In. 618, that was during the first half of April almost destroyed and 16. April, Essen fell into captivity.
