Later in life he was unlucky, joining the army in 1961 and undergoing parachute training to confront his fear of heights, during two training jumps his parachute broke each time but he survived. He requested to deploy to Vietnam but was denied, he ended his military career with the rank of Captain at Fort Bragg where he trained young soldiers who were to be deployed to Vietnam.

After his military service, he married, started a family and built a successful chain of butcher shops. Unfortunately, there were problems when he failed to pay his taxes and lost his disability benefits. In 1977, he was tipped off by Maryland police that his second wife and son-in-law were plotting against him to kill him. Both confessed in court and he asked the court for leniency. In the 1980s, he ran out of life savings. In 1985, his mobile home burned down and he was forced to go camping. In August of that year, he was arrested by police because marijuana was found in the cornfield where he was camping. The state attorney tried to charge Lucas with illegal manufacture and possession of narcotics, but all charges were subsequently dropped.
