During his military career, Jackie Robinson came up against racial segregation several times. One of which was an incident on July 6, 1944. While awaiting test results at the hospital for a contusion injury he sustained in junior college, Robinson boarded an Army bus in which the wife of one of the officers was riding; although the Army had arranged its own non-segregated bus routes, the driver ordered Robinson to sit at the end. Robinson refused. The driver complied, but after he reached the terminus, he called the military police, who took Robinson into custody. When Robinson later confronted the investigating officer about racist questioning by the officer and his assistant, the officer recommended that Robinson be court-martialed.

After the commander of the 761st Tank Battalion, Paul L. Bates, denied court-martial, Robinson was transferred to the 758th Tank Battalion, where the commander quickly charged Robinson with numerous offenses, including public drunkenness, even though Robinson was a teetotaler.

By the time the court-martial took place in August 1944, all charges against Robinson had been dropped except for two counts of insubordination during interrogation. Robinson was acquitted of all charges by a jury of nine officers, all of whom were white.

Although his former unit, the 761st Tank Battalion, was the first tank unit made up of African Americans to engage in combat in World War II. A court martial prevented Robinson from being sent overseas. He never made it to combat.

After the trial, he was transferred to Camp Breckinridge in Kentucky, where he coached the Army track and field team until his discharge in November 1944.
