On 23.07.1988 at 15:38, the submarine Nadashio (SS-577) collided with the sport fishing boat Fuji Maru No.1 at Uraga Channel in Tokyo Bay and Fuji Maru No.1 soon sank. In this accident, 30 of the 48 passengers and crew members on the Fuji Maru No.1 lost their lives. Nadashio (SS-577) was on her way back from an exercise and Fuji Maru No.1 was en route to Niijima Island, Izu. The Uraga Channel, where the accident occurred, is known as a busy sea, with more than 700 tankers and container ships arriving and departing each day.
Both the captain of the submarine Nadashio and the captain of the Fuji Maru No. 1 were given suspended prison sentences because of the collision.
