Počas letu v ľavej stúpavej zákrute došlo ku rozsvieteniu signalizácie požiaru motora a nárastu teploty výstupných plynov na 900°C. Piloti pplk. Vladimír ADÁMEK / npor. Jaroslav SOCHR stiahli páku ovládania motoru do polohy STOP, uzavreli protipožiarny kohút a inštruktor niekoľkokrát stlačil tlačidlo hasenia. Piloti sa katapultovali nad obcou Vyšehněvice. Lietadlo po katapultáži prešlo do stúpania a po strate rýchlosti dopadlo plocho s veľkou vertikálnou rýchlosťou klesania. (Miesto dopadu zamrznutý plytký rybník na okraji lesa v katastri obce Rohovládová Bělá – Vyšehněvice). Požiar vznikol v dôsledku kontaktu rotora a statora dvojitého zadného labyrintu rotora vysokotlakého kompresora a tým došlo k zapáleniu titánovej zliatiny (zhotovený rotor labyrintu).
