Probably in 1938, the company Daimler-Benz won a contract for the development of a tank replacement Pz.Kpfw. III. The company completed the design proposal VK 20.01 (III) on 14.12.1938. It was one of the first designs of a tank chassis with interleaved castors (Schachtellaufwerk). Similar chassis had German half-track artillery tractors and later tank designs Panther, or Tiger.
The only known information about this tank is the type of engine used, which was to be a Maybach HL 116 with 300 horsepower at 3300 rpm.
