(I) I was flying Blue Four and at approximately 11:25 we discovered a large group of unidentified aircraft approximately 10 miles northwest of Lingen and went to check it out. Upon arrival we found over 12 aircraft at 26,000 feet consisting of 109's and 190's and about 15 more at about 12,000 feet. Our squadron formed a large circle and climbed up to meet the group above. When we almost reached their altitude, two ME-109s came in from above between Number 3 and me. After they saw my plane, they immediately began to climb. I followed them and fired at the one on the left at 350 yards. The shots hit him and he started smoking heavily and turning left.(1) As they both flew side by side, I couldn't chase the one I hit for fear the other would get on my tail. So I attacked the other ME-109, but my starboard guns jammed, making my fire highly ineffective. Hits came on the fuselage and tail, the plane rolled over on its side, but was still flying straight.
