Famo with Tatra diesel engine
One of the earliest references to the use of a Tatra air-cooled diesel engine (Tatra Type 111) in a German half-track tractor Sd.Kfz. 9 of the 18-ton weight category can be found in a report Ringhoffer-Tatra-Werke A.G. from Nesselsdorf (Kopřivnice) on test runs dated 20.3.1944. One tractor was delivered directly from Famo in Breslau (Vratislav) sometime in 2/1944, where it subsequently underwent a modification where the original engine was replaced by a Tatra diesel engine. The engine designation Tatra 111 is given in the report, but the type Tatra 103 is generally mentioned in various sources. The difference between the two types is unknown to me, they are probably an identical engine with two different designations. The purpose of this modification was probably an attempt to save fuel. The original German Maybach HL 108 TUKRM petrol engine had a standard petrol consumption of 120 l/100 km, the Tatra diesel engine had a standard diesel consumption of 63.5 l/100 km. The diesel tractor reached a top speed of up to 60 km/h. On 5 March 1944 the vehicle was sent on its own axis to the test centre in Kummersdorf. More information is missing.
