Lieutenant Colonel Duane W. "Bee" Beeson

Narodil se 6. července 1921 ve městě Boise stát Idaho. Vychodil zde střední školu a v roce 1941 se dostal na kalifornskou univerzitu, ale studií zanechal a chtěl vstoupit do letectva. USAAC ho však odmítlo a tak jak řada jeho dalších krajanů vstoupil do RCAF.

Pilotní výcvik ukončil v únoru 1942 a odjel do Anglie, kde 1. září 1942 nastupuje k 71. (Eagle) peruti RAF. 12. září, ze tří perutí amerických dobrovolníku v RAF, vzniká 4. Fighter Group USAAF a Beeson se stává příslušníkem 334. perutě, kam vstoupil jako Second Lieutenant. 4. FG létá na Spitfirech, na kterých však Beeson nedosáhl žádného vítězství.

V březnu 1943 4. FG začala létat na nových stíhačkách P-47 Thunderbolt a Beeson první bojový let na novém stroji absolvuje 29. dubna 1943. V měsíci dubnu byl také povýšen do hodnosti First Lieutenant. První vítězství si připsal 18. května nad Messerschmittem Bf 109, kterou sestřelil u Ostende. Druhé vítězství získal 26. června, když asi 16 kilometrů od Dieppe sestřelil do vln kanálu La Manche další Bf 109. O měsíc později, přesně 28. července, získali piloti 4. FG devět sestřelů. Jeden si připsal i Duane, jehož oběť se zřítila u města Emmerich. Čtvrté vítězství se mu podařilo získat 2. října, a to když sestřelil Fw 190. 8. října doprovázeli piloti „Čtvrté“ bombardéry k náletu na Brémy. Beeson při této akci u Zwolle sestřelil dvojici Bf 109, čímž se stal esem 4. FG. V listopadu se stal střeleckým důstojníkem skupiny a musel absolvovat šestitýdenní instruktážní kurz.

První vítězství v novém roce získal 14. ledna, když Luftwaffe připravil o další výrobek firmy Focke-Wulf. 29. ledna společně s dalšími piloty skupiny Duane doprovázel bombardéry k náletu na Frankfurt. Nad Cáchami si připsal další double, když mu za oběť padla dvojice stíhaček, a to Bf 109 a Fw 190. 31. ledna získal jubilejní desáté vítězství, když u nizozemského letiště Gilze-Rijen sestřelil jednu stodevítku ze šesti, které si při této akci piloti 4. FG připsali. V měsíci únoru byl Beeson povýšen na Captain a další sestřel získal opět u Cách, a to 20. února, když sestřelil Fw 190. 25. února uzavřel i své konto na Thunderboltech, na kterých získal 12 sestřelů a stal se tak nejúspěšnějsím esem 4. FG na tomto typu stíhačky.

Koncem měsíce února se skupina přezbrojuje na legendární Mustangy a první bojový let s nimi uskuteční 28. února 1944. Captain Beeson první sestřel na novém typu získává 5. března, kdy pokořil stodevítku, která se zřítí v okolí Bordeaux. O dva dny později byl jmenován velitelem 334. Fighter Squadron. 18. března sestřelil východně od Mannheimu Bf 109. 23. března získal další double, když k zemi poslal dvě stodevítky.

Měsíc duben začíná pro Beesona dobře, protože hned 1. dubna sestřeluje další Bf 109, kterou sestřelil severně od Bodamského jezera. 5. dubna získává podíl na sestřelu Ju 88, ale při strafingu na letiště u Brandenburgu byl sestřelen německým flakem, který tak rozhoduje, jak stráví dalších téměř třináct měsíců svého života. Jeho skóre se tak zastavuje na hodnotě 17,33 sestřelů.

Zatímco se těšil a užíval "pohostinství" německého zajateckého tábora, byl povýšen do hodnosti Major, a to týden po svém zajetí. Zajatecký tábor je osvobozen Rudou armádou 29. dubna 1945.

Po válce zůstal v řadách letectva, kde získal hodnost Lieutenant Colonel, do které je povýšen v listopadu 1945. Ale jeho další kariéru zmařil mozkový nádor, na který umírá 13. února 1947.

Beeson získal mimo jiné tato vyznamenání: Distinguished Service Cross, 6x Distinguished Flying Medal, Silver Star, Air Medal.
