Kampfgruppe 18. Panzergrenadier-Division was set up in early September 1944, in the Military training area Neuhammer (Military district VIII) under the command of major general Bölsena as a core for a replacement for 18. the division of the panzer grenadiers, destroyed in June 1944 in Belarus during the soviet operation Bagration. The original intention was to strengthen the combat group of the remnants of the cancelled Panzer brigade 105 and transform it into a full-fledged division. Instead, it was the torso of a brigade sent to the western front to reinforce the 9. panzer division, kampfgruppe passed into the subordination of the the Headquarters of the reserve army and sent to East Prussia (Military district I). In the Military area Mielau gradually fill the ranks and 2. December 1944 from the battle group has become the 18. the division of the panzer grenadiers.
