Fairchild / Fairchild Republic

Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seater twin-engine aircraft, designed specifically for combat missions, designed to directly support ground units ( CAS - Close Air Support ), with a special purpose for the destruction of tanks and other armored vehicles, including hardened objects. The A-10 is nicknamed Warthog. Perhaps due to the raised riveting of the aircraft, perhaps for its overall "non-standard" beauty. The A-10 is sometimes described as the ugliest aircraft in the world. However, this is an unfair label. The Russian Mi-24 Hind combat helicopter clearly leads by two warts and a trunk in this category. However, the A-10 holds an honorable second place.
Prototype attack aircraft developed for the United States Air Force A-X program. The YA-9 was passed over in preference for the Fairchild Republic YA-10 that entered production as the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
