Pri chickamauga one morning sa good neviedlo even brigádnemu general Benjamin Harkin Helms. Pochádzal of Kentucky and the university of the West Pointe. After the end of the štúdia sa gave up rank and vyštudoval right and vstúpil to the policy. In 1856, sa married with nevlastnou sister Mary Lincolnovej, the wife of budúceho president. After začiatku secesie zostala Kentucky neutrálna, but this condition much I couldn't vydržať. President Lincoln ponúkol svojmu príbuznému posts about federálnej the army, or štátnom aparáte, but Helm odmietol. Instead he began to organizovať one of the first jednotiek of Kentucky, with that sa I pridať to konfederačným forces. Helm got hodnosť colonel slúžil under the command of general Buckner in Kentucky. In októbri 1861 he was promoted to brigádneho general and velil slávnej "Brigáde sirôt" (Orphan Brigade). After bitke pri Batton Rouge sa joined so my brigade to the Army of Tennessee. He graduated from the campaign of the pri Tullahoma, po ktorej came the fateful fight during Chickamauga. He's buried at rodinnom cintoríne in Hardin County, Kentucky.
