Stephen Rochefontaine was a French aristocrat, an officer of the French Royal Army, an officer of the Continental Army and finally an officer of the US Regular Army.

He was born on February 20, 1755 to Étienne Nicolas Marie Béchet, Sieur de Rochefontaine in the town of Ay in the department of Marne in northeastern France. Until 1778, before leaving for America, he served in the French Royal Corps of Engineering. After arriving in America on May 15, 1778, he enlisted as a volunteer in the Continental Army. Due to his experience, he was included in the Corps of Engineers, where he received the rank of captain on September 18, 1778. For his courage in conquering Yorktown, he received the honorary rank of major by a decision of the US Congress of November 16, 1781.

In 1783 he returned to France, where he served as an infantry officer and reached the rank of colonel. In 1792 he left for the USA for good and changed his name to Stephen. In 1794, President Washington commissioned him to fortify the coast of New England. After the establishment of the Corps of Artillery and Engineers, he was president Washington February 26, 1795, appointed his commander and was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel. He left the army on 07.05.1798. He spent the rest of his life in New York, where he died on January 30, 1814. He is buried in Churchyard of St. Paul's Chapel in New York.
