The predecessor of the 2nd Infantry Division was formed in January 1871 at Sendai, Miyagi as the Sendai Garrison, one of the 6 newly formed regional commands.

The Sendai Garrison had responsibility for the northern region of Honshū (Tohoku District), from Fukushima Prefecture to Aomori Prefecture.

The 6th Regional Commands were transformed into divisions, based on the reorganization of the army on May 14, 1888.

The command of the 2nd Division was based at Ni-no-maru, Sendao Castle, where the campus of Tohoku University is located today.

Composition of the division at the beginning of its existence

- 4th Infantry Regiment (formed in Sendai)
- 5th Infantry Regiment (formed in Aomori)
- 16th Infantry Regiment (formed in Shibata)
- 17th Infantry Regiment (formed in Akita)
- 29th Infantry Regiment (formed in Wakamatsu) - after the outbreak of World War II

As one of Japan's oldest divisions, it participated in the fighting of the First Sino-Japanese War as well as the Russo-Japanese War, where it gained a great reputation for its excellent night operations.

From 1930 to 1933 the division was commanded by Lt. Gen. Jiro Tamon. In 1931, the division is assigned to the Kwangtung Army in Manchuria. Here the division conducts the initial operations of the invasion of Manchuria, followed by the Jiangqiao Campaign, Operation Chinchow, the defense of Harbin, which follows the Mukden Incident.

In the second half of 1939, the division serves under the 3rd Army, which is stationed on the border with the USSR north of Korea.

The Katayama Detachment of the 2nd Division (consisting of the 15th Infantry Brigade with the 16th and 30th Infantry Regiments and a battalion of field artillery) took part in the fighting near the Akiyama Heights and Heights 997, respectively, on September 6-10, 1939.

The 2nd Division and the 4th Division are assigned to the 6th Army as reinforcement units for the planned counterattack during the Nomonhan / Khalkhin Gol campaign. However, this action is cancelled due to the signing of the armistice.

After the outbreak of hostilities related to the Second Sino-Japanese War, the 2nd Division's 15th Mixed Brigade fights during the Chahar Invasion and the Battle of Xuzhou. During the latter, the 3rd Infantry Brigade is temporarily assigned to the North China Zone Army.

After the outbreak of war in the Pacific, the 2nd Division is reassigned to the Southern Front commanded by Field Marshal Terauchi Hisaichi. The 2nd Division is one of the divisions that occupy the Dutch East Indies.

The division loses 7,000 men during the disastrous Battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. After this setback, the division is redeployed as an occupation force in Malaya and Singapore.

In 1944, the division is moved to Burma to prevent the reoccupation of Burma by British forces there. Initially the division operates in Arakan, fighting on the beaches there, and then in May 1944 it is moved under the direct command of the Burma Zone Army.

The division is used as a strategic reserve and is slowly eliminated during the Burma conflict.

The surviving components are assigned to the 38th Army in French Indochina, and the division is disbanded after the end of the war.
