MAGACH 7A
מגח 7א
History The Magach 7A tanks are a continuation and improvement of the Magach 6 series of tanks. Another, this time more emphatic, improvement of the original American tank M60A1 / M60A3 and its improved Israeli versions Magach 6 was decided by the Israeli tank command after the fighting in Lebanon (probably the initial impetus was given by Israeli General Yisrael Tal, the mastermind behind the Merkava series of tanks).
The aim of the modernization was to become tank protection again, the Achilles heel of the M60 Patton series tanks. Now the Blazer dynamic-reactive armour was no longer to be used - although it proved very effective in combat. Instead, a new, very likely composite armour was to be used to protect future Magach 7 tanks against both the High-Explosive-Anti-Tank (HEAT) cumulative warheads and the Armour-Piercing-Fin-Stabilised-Discarding-Sabot (APFSDS) sub-calibre penetrating rounds used in the Egyptian and Syrian T-62 and T-72 tanks.
The tanks were introduced into the IDF arsenal in the 1980s. After testing the Magach 7A tanks in service and subsequently in combat, it was decided to modernize them. The Gimel version (Magach 7C) became the successor, the Bet variant (Magach 7B) became an intermediate version and was not produced. Approximately 400 Magach 7A and Magach 7C tanks are in the armament and service of the Israel Defense Forces tank force. Currently, Magach 7A tanks are in reserve.
Description It is therefore a modified American tank M60A1 / M60A3 (hence Magach 6). The main difference between the Magach 7 series and the Magach 6B is visible at a glance. The Magach 6B tanks are equipped with Blazer reactive armor. In contrast, the Magach 7A is equipped with heavy additional passive armor, which provides better protection than the Blazer reactive armor.
The hull of the vehicle has remained almost unchanged. Thick (thick) plates of additional armour have been added and are mounted on the front, sides and bottom of the hull. The driver's compartment remained in the front part of the hull, in the middle of the hull there is a combat compartment with a swivel turret equipped with a gun, and in the rear part of the hull there is the tank's power unit. The original M60 series tank turret is covered with new additional armour. The front of the tank turret has only a minimal inclination (70°-80°) and is similar to the turret of the M1 Abrams / M1A1 Abrams / M1A2 Abrams, as well as the sides of the turret have a minimal inclination and are segmented. This gives the tank's turret its characteristic angular appearance with sharp angles. At the rear, there is a new welded basket for accessories (equipment, spare parts, tools ...), which is fully connected to the side armour.
The running gear (wheel hangers) has been modified to take the increased weight of the tank, but otherwise remains unchanged. On each side of the hull there are 6 independently hinged double running wheels on torsion bars, 3 supporting pulleys, a tension wheel in front and a drive gear in the rear. Additional armour plates cover the sides of the hull up to the level of the running wheels. The tanks use the same tracks as on the Merkava Mk.1 and Magach 6B tanks.
Also from the tank Merkava Mk.1 came a new powerplant, an American-made AVDS-1790-5A air-cooled supercharged diesel engine, along with a CD-850-6BX transmission also American-made. These had to be used due to the significant increase in weight of the tank (up to 5 tons). The engine output in the clean configuration is 950 horsepower at 2,640 rpm.
The tank retains its original armament, which is the turret-mounted 105mm IMI M68 gun (a licensed British-made extended rifled gun [u:L7), but got a new thermal jacket for the barrel (the same as my Magach 6B series). The gun is coupled with a machine gun FN MAG in 7.62mm caliber, which replaced the coupled 7.62mm machine gun M73 / M219, the original armament of the M60. 55 rounds are available for the gun. The turret has a 360° full-circle sight and the gun sight ranges from -10° to +20°. Like other Israeli tanks, the Magach 7A has an additional 3 machine guns on the turret roof. One machine gun FN MAG in 7.62 mm calibre is mounted on the commander's hatch and one machine gun FN MAG in 7.62 mm calibre, and a large-calibre machine gun M2HB in 12.7 mm calibre is mounted on the gun barrel cradle. The latter is partially coupled to the gun, operated from inside the vehicle, and is used to engage lightly armoured targets. This saves ammunition for the tank's main weapon while protecting the crew from enemy fire. The machine guns mounted on the turret roof are often referred to as anti-aircraft guns, but in the case of Israeli tanks, they are mainly used to silence an enemy's uncovered live force, or light armour, and anti-aircraft defences are relegated to the background. The Magach 7A is also equipped with 2 smoke grenade launchers IS-10 with 20 smoke grenades CL-3030 (but it is believed that burst grenades can also be fired). The tank also got a newer fire control system (probably the Matador system) and the optical rangefinder was completely replaced. The fire control system consists of a day/night sight for the gunner, a laser rangefinder, an electronic computer to calculate the ballistic curve, and an independent sight for the commander.
