In preparation for the Caucasus campaign, the Foreign Department of the Abwehr(Amt Ausland/Abwehr)[/i:Neuhammer from October 1941 in the Silesian training area Neuhammer to form a unit Abwehr-Unternehmen Bergmann from volunteers, deserters and prisoners of war coming from the Caucasus and train it for a special task - to occupy the so-called. Vladikavkaz) and Tbilisi to ensure the passage of German troops across the main ridge of the Caucasus.

In late 1941 and early 1942, the battalion-strength unit reached its planned strength of 1,200 men (900 Caucasians and 300 Germans, including members of the Brandenburg Regiment) and moved to the mountain troop training facility in Mittenwald, Bavaria.
It was composed of five companies:
1st Company (Georgian)
2nd Company (North Caucasus)
3rd Company (Azerbaijani)
4th Company (North Caucasus)
5th Company (Armenian)

On 29 July 1942, it received orders to move by rail to the Caucasus and from 12 August fought in the 5th Panzer Army line-up in the Malka River valley east of Mozdok. On 25 August it reached Pyatigorsk, but penetrating the passes on the Georgian Military Road was beyond its capabilities.

In the following period, small independent groups of Bergmann troops operated behind the front line, conducting reconnaissance and sabotage operations.
Of note was a paratroop landing of 10 Germans and 15 Caucasians into the oil refinery in Grozny to hold it until the arrival of 1st Panzer Army units. An attempt by German troops to break into Grozny on 25-27 September ended in failure, but the group managed to return safely and even brought with them several hundred Georgians, Azerbaijanis and Chechens who had deserted the Red Army and joined the battalion.

From late September 1942, the Bergmann Battalion operated against Soviet partisan units in the Mozdok - Nalchik - Mineralnye Vody area and was deployed to the front on 29 October. Throughout the period, it recruited additional defectors, prisoners of war and locals and was thus able to form four additional rifle companies (Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani and mixed) in addition to the existing ones.
This enabled the transformation to a regiment of 2,300 men with three battalions in early 1943:
I. Georgian
II. Azerbaijani
III. the North Caucasian.
On 11 January the transformation was completed and the regiment operated under the name Sonderverband Bergmann.

The Abwehr-Unternehmen Bergmann unit had the kinžal, a traditional dagger of the Caucasian peoples. Its members also wore a cap badge with a cinema like this Georgian volunteer Tatašvilli, whose photo was published by Signal magazine.
